Was it one of ours? Or one of them?
This is the question that flashes in the minds of Americans after the mass shooting. Was the alleged killer a jihadist? shooter at Pulse nightclub In Orlando in 2016 Left extremist, like the shooter who attacked Congressional Baseball Practice 2017? Vegan Animal rights fanatic? Or, as happened yesterday in Buffalo, New York, the white supremacist who believed in the “big replacement” theory.
In a politically polarized, heavily armed society, each new massacre quickly becomes another source of mutual accusation.
Accusations of deadly white supremacy after the buffalo seem particularly appropriate, especially worthy. Some of the highest media voices in the country have expressed ideas night after night that are very similar to the ideas that allegedly brought the alleged murderer to life; those ideas are disgusting. Their words will be quoted to them, they will join the demands that they renounce the ideology of white supremacy. Maybe some of them will even do that. Will it make a difference?
The decisive variable of mass shooting is not the ideas, but the weapons. We can not control the ideas or the word; we should not try to do it, even if we can. But we can reduce the availability of weapons that turn ideology into atrocity. In any case, other advanced countries think they can do it. There are vitriolic citizens in almost every country on earth, but no relatively developed country has an epidemic like America’s gun violence.
Yesterday’s alleged shooter seems to be white supremacy. If the next killer is Muslim or vegan, many of them now want to blame Buffalo’s suspected supporters. will want to do the opposite– Of course, those who now want to limit the guilt to only the alleged murderer, next time will be ready to spread the guilt as widely as possible.
Racist ideology is evil in itself. But the American exception, that this country is bathed in blood and sorrow again and again, is not that we are uniquely subject to racism or jihadism or veganism. The American exception is the unique ease of access to weapons.
Condemn the words, if you will, but understand what those words do and what they do not. To save lives, focus on what takes lives. Americans die in such horrific numbers from guns because Americans live with such reckless contempt for guns.
