The two officials were not allowed to speak publicly about the issue, they did so on condition of anonymity.

Police officials և the spokesman for the supermarket chain did not immediately respond to AP messages for comment.

The gunman entered the supermarket with a rifle and opened fire, said one of the officials. Investigators believe the man was able to broadcast the shooting live to find out if he posted the manifesto online, the official said.

The official warned that the investigation was at an early stage, that the authorities had not yet found a clear motive, but were investigating whether the shooting was racially motivated.

The supermarket is located mainly in the Black Sea district, about 3 miles (5 kilometers) north of downtown Buffalo. The surrounding area is mostly residential, there is a Family Dollar shop and a fire station near the shop.

Witnesses said the gunman was wearing military-style clothing and armor, an official said.

Brady Kephart և Shane Hill, both 20, entered the parking lot as soon as the shooter came out. They described him as a white man in his late teens or early twenties, a helmet that looked like a gun.

“He was standing there, the gun to his chin. We were like what was happening. Why is there a gun to this child’s face? ” Kefart said. He knelt down. “He tore off his helmet, dropped his pistol, and the police turned to him.”

The police closed the block, which was lined up by the spectators, and the police surrounded the parking lot with a yellow ribbon. Mayor Byron Brown and Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz were at the scene late Saturday afternoon, gathered in the parking lot in front of the Tops store, and expected to speak to the media.

Governor Katie Hochul tweeted that she was “closely following the shooting at a grocery store in her hometown of Buffalo.” He said government officials had offered assistance to local authorities. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office said on social media that it had ordered all available staff to assist the Buffalo police.

The shooting took place a year after March 2021 attack At the King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado, which killed 10 people. Investigators have not released any information as to why they believe the man accused of the attack targeted the supermarket.
