Avril Lavigne returns like pop-punk | CBC News:

It’s 2003 18 18-year-old Avril Lavigne walks the stage at Junos with her signature sweat, a peeled necklace and a stained eye pencil.

That he was ready for six titles that night (four of which he would take home, including the album նոր New Year’s Artist), was just the first time he had won the award. Less than a year had passed since Napanee, Ont., The teen released their first album, Let goHe won five Grammy Awards and became one of Canada’s most famous musicians.

And now, twenty years later, with the return of a new album, Lavigne returns to Junos, or this time only to perform. And despite the fact that he has released five other studio albums since then, “ran” and even won at Junos in 2020, it is still a definite comeback.

“I said I felt it was probably the best front-to-back alternative,” Lavin said in an interview with CBC about his new album. «[It’s] “The recording I always wanted to make was just as easy without the hassle.”

Love Saxon!Lavigne’s new album is a return to the modern pop-punk style that he spread, but gently deviated from in later years. This is the route she has taken to help make the pop-punk genre a staple, especially for women and girls.

Pop-punk princess

Because, even on that night in 2003, out of the crowds at Corel Center, avoiding the dominance of his songs Complex: and durable earworm Sk8er Boi, he influenced the way people live. So much so that “then,” years later, you will probably see its effects as soon as you walk out the door.

And if Avril takes a look back at the early 2000s fashion, it’s just because he did. something he noticed in one of his first concerts in Vancouver, even before the Junos voyage.

“I remember being in my dressing room during that show, looking out the window and seeing a number of people coming to the show,” he said. “And they were all dressed like me, with ties, white shirts and eyeliners … it was just crazy.”

Immediately Ashley Simpson և Canadians, along with Skye Sweetnam և Fefe Dobson, helped the “pop-punk princesses” figure out what women can be like as pop stars and even what music they can create. And in the form of a necklace դուրս out of the “Home Hardware” shirt, which went on sale nationally just because he showed up SNL: wearing onethat effect is again manifested in the great egg.

“First of all, I want to thank Avril for coming here today,” said Olivia Rodrigo, seconds after Lavin presented her with the Best Composer of the Year award. December 2021 at Variety Hitmaker’s Brunch. “I’m a big fan of you. I look at you a lot, so this is so surreal for me. ”

Then, at the age of 18, Rodrigo began his career at the same age as Lavigne, which Lavigne himself said was just one of the parallels between them. And just a few months later, Rodrigo invited Lavin on stage to play Complex:Do not trace what he described as the direct inspiration of his groundbreaking song Good 4U.

“He reinterpreted the girl”

This is part of a pop-punk revival that is back in the mainstream. This was partly due to the emergence of TikTok as a developer of musical taste, which in fact significantly reduced the advantage of new songs over “catalog music”, giving priority to the attractive choir over everything else.

It also helped young listeners discover and share that rebellious, pop voice. And at the same time, it helped contemporary artists like Willo Smith (who recorded a single last year, GROWWith Lavin) et Meet Me @ The Altar pop-punk band (who are they? dedicate their new album to him in part) combine style while using the rebellious, self-assured attitude that the genre, especially Lavin, has put on the map.

“We write our own songs, we’re really inspired by it [Avril]”Trying to be unique,” said Meet Me @ The Altar guitarist Thea Campbell in an interview with CBC. “We want to bring something new to the table, as he did.”

“If you were an adult at some point, you could not help but think about how she redefined being a girl,” says Melissa Vincent, a Canadian music journalist. “As she reinterpreted what it means to be a teenager, I think she allowed a lot of young people, especially young women, to explore their sexuality, their gender, their fatherhood.”

“It’s not just Lavigne, the style of music of musicians like him, that has had a lasting impact,” Vincent said. When women struggled into pop-punk space in the early 2000s, they challenged what women could wear and how they could perform as musicians. Until then, it had been open to men as they wished, while women had been expected to fit into another horse.

“I always knew it would be with me.” Choosing a career for Avril Lavigne was definitely not difficult.

Revival of pop punk

Even to exist in the world of pop-punk, which has traditionally been straight, masculine-white, as someone who does not fit that font, requires an attitude rooted in unforgiving self-expression.

Artists like Lizo, who celebrate the positivity of the body, oppose the established standards of beauty, are punk, Kid Cudi wears a dress for his performance. SNL: just “annoy” some people is punk, said Vincent. And even Billy Alylish (who, although he is not a pop-punk artist, published a joint photo of the two in 2020 with the caption “Thank you for making me what I am”), mostly in wide clothes. What a female pop musician might expect is also punk.

“Those things slowly got into the mainstream pop,” Vincent said. “And now we are at the moment when we see it in its full expression.”

And even when Lavigne returns to the spotlight, another pop-punk musician returns. Fefe Dobson released his first album for the first time just a year after Lavin, and this year he released his first single in the last eight years. Fckn in love.

Dobson had such a journey as Lavin, who says that their music is quite different, that the frequent comparisons between the two are nothing but a superficial connection. they are both just women in a space that generally did not accept them.

And as a pop-punk black woman, Dobson said she was often interrogated. They called him “Brandy Spears” and even tried to push him to R&B by an early label.

However, if the music was not exactly the same, he says, the struggle was the same for both.

“We were all tired of being cute, wearing certain clothes or being a ‘beautiful girl,'” she said. “We wanted to be friends, you know, we wanted to be better than our friends. I think it was a good time for girls to like Avril.«

Times are a little different now, he said. But before Meet Me @ The Altar, all three women of color, said they owed their musical taste and success to Dobson և Lavin (a message that made Dobson drown to some extent because he never he thinks that the fans will look at him (that way) he thinks that the thread of rebellion is still necessary.

That could be part of his return. Even if Dobson said he finished the single in 2012, now was just the time to release it. Because living inside for years: a a mental health crisis that just keeps getting worse He said that young people “once used pop-punk to be vocal” just “screaming in their lungs”.

“I think that the genre has been taken seriously… here is the meaning of the genre. “Take it seriously,” he explained before pausing or correcting. “Not to be taken seriously, but to be heard, you know, to be seen.”
