Children’s formula. Causes and Consequences of North America Shortage | CBC News:

Many parents are looking for baby formula because of the combination of short-term and long-term problems that have plagued major US brands.

Millions of babies in the United States rely on formula, which is the only source of nutrition recommended for infants who are not exclusively breastfed.

Here’s what the problem is, like the situation in the Canadian market.

What are the reasons?

Continued supply disruptions have been accompanied by a recent security recall that has left many pharmacies and supermarket shelves bare.

The problems started last year, as the COVID-19 epidemic led to labor, transport and raw material disruptions and economic problems that did not spare the formula industry. The inventory was later compressed by parents who accumulated during the COVID-19 blockade.

US stores run out of infant formula due to recall or supply disruptions

Rising demand, supply chains disrupted by the epidemic, and the recall of powdered baby formula released by the US Food and Drug Administration in February have all contributed to the nationwide shortage.

Then, in February, Abbott Nutrition recalled powder mixes from several major brands and closed its Sturgis, Mich. factory when federal officials began investigating four infants who had contracted a bacterial infection after consuming formula from the facility.

Abbott is one of the few companies that produces the vast majority of US Resolution supplies, so their recall destroyed a large portion of the market.

What’s in the baby formula?

Most formulas contain protein from cow’s milk, which has been replaced by more easily digestible, fortified supplements needed for growth and development. The Food and Drug Administration sets minimum nutritional requirements, including the minimum amount of proteins, fats, calcium, and a number of vitamins. Formula manufacturers reach these levels by adding different sugars, oils and minerals.

Mixtures are designed to mimic breast milk, and studies have repeatedly shown better health outcomes for breastfed babies.

Why is Resolution Important for Many Families?

Health experts recommend exclusively breastfeeding for babies up to six months old. But federal figures show that only one in four people at that age rely solely on breast milk.

Mothers face a number of long-term challenges with breastfeeding, including returning to work and finding the time and equipment needed to express breast milk. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 60 percent of mothers stop breastfeeding earlier than planned.

How are US retailers doing?

Several national networks have limited the number of containers that customers can buy in stores և online. The limit for CVS և Walgreens is three clients. The target is limiting purchases to four people when shopping online.

Amazon said Thursday it was working to keep the product available on its website, to monitor third-party sellers for price increases.

“If we find a price that violates our policy, we remove the offer and take appropriate action with the seller,” the company spokesman said in a statement.

Is the situation the same in Canada?

Mostly not. Retailers here tell CBC News that they have not suffered much from the shortage, although a national spokesman for the Canadian Retail Council said he had heard from a retailer struggling to maintain a stable supply of the resolution since 2021.

For Loblaw, the recall affected its ability to hold certain types of resolutions, but the company said it had found alternatives.

The lack of infant formula in the United States is affecting Canadian parents

The shortage of infant formula in the United States is beginning to affect Canadian stores and parents, especially those looking for special formula.

As it happens, it is mainly a challenge for parents of newborns who require special formula due to allergies, digestive problems and other medical conditions.

“Over the past few months, we have seen a sharp drop in certain pediatric medications,” said David Bannon, co-owner of Pharmaprix in Montreal, noting that the biggest concern was with the hypoallergenic compound.

While supply chains may be weakening, Feyza Sahinyazan, a business assistant at Simon Fraser University, warns that buying panic is not the answer, as it can only exacerbate the problem.

What do policymakers do?

Typically, according to federal officials, 98% of baby formula used in the United States is made domestically.

The FDA is working with Abbott to rectify the breach caused by the shutdown of the Michigan plant, which produces Similac, EleCare և and a number of other leading powder mixtures. The company says its products are not directly linked to bacterial infections in children, noting that the genetic samples collected from its factory do not match those found in several sick newborns.

This will be a problem և it will not go away in at least a few months– Dr. Steven Abrams, University of Texas Pediatrician

US President Joe Biden on Thursday discussed with Gerber և Rekit executives how they can increase production and how his administration can help, the White House said. He spoke with Walmart և Target executives about how to refill the shelves, address regional disparities in access to the resolution.

The administration plans to control possible price increases, work with import partners from Mexico, Chile, Ireland and the Netherlands.

However, experts warn that many of the industry’s large-scale problems will continue to hamper supplies.

“It’s going to be a problem, it’s not going to go away in a few months,” said Dr. Stephen Abrams, a pediatrician at the University of Texas.

Advice for parents

Most regular baby formulas contain the same basic ingredients and nutrients, so parents should not hesitate to buy another brand if they have difficulty finding their regular brand.

The Associated Press spoke to Americans who connect with trusted friends և mothers in Facebook groups for tips on where items are available or to share more. But health officials warn against buying dairy products from social media sites or out of the ordinary retail market, as they may be counterfeit.

Daris Browning from California, AIH guest presenter Helen Mann, says she is ready with two or four cans of baby formula for her 10-month-old daughter.

Recipes for “do-it-yourself” formulas found on the Internet are not recommended as they may contain cow’s milk աքար granulated sugar that can be difficult for young children to digest և generally lack the specific vitamins և proteins found by the FDA in mixtures. Parents should also never dilute infant formula.
