Everything you need to know about cocktail syrups – cocktail hammers

If you’ve ever tried making a cocktail at home, you’ve probably come across the word syrup. If you look closely at the bottle with all the fun little labels in front of you, you will notice that most of them are different types of syrup. But being labeled with syrup does not mean that these bottles are full of sugar.

The process of turning something into syrup involves mixing your main ingredients with boiling water until it dissolves into a fragrant liquid. As you basically melt the main ingredient in the liquid, your goal is to have a balanced richness և viscosity that will complement the other flavors added to your cocktail. The result should be a perfectly tasty, well-balanced alcoholic beverage.

For this menu, we have compiled some of the most popular syrups used in your favorite cocktails, with their ingredients and instructions for making each one. We have also added some popular cocktails that use them with tips for storing syrup. Enjoy!

Brown sugar or Demerara syrup.

Unlike white sugar, brown sugar has a deep, caramel or iris flavor due to the added molasses. White sugar is usually considered much sweeter than brown sugar.

Demerara is also called “dark brown sugar” on certain packages; it is a type of sugar that is darker than brown sugar, with larger crystals that provide a more brittle texture. Demerara sugar retains the flavor of cane molasses more than brown sugar.

Homemade Grenadine

Grenadine is a syrup made from a mixture of sugar and pomegranate juice. It’s quite easy to find artificial grenadines that are easily bottled for your home-made cocktails, but this is an ingredient you may be more inclined to make at home, as bottled grenadines are usually too sweet to my liking.
