Friday, May 20, 2022 (HealthDay News) – Poor eyesight makes reading easier և makes traveling easier. But it could also lead to a misdiagnosis of mental retardation in the elderly, according to a new small study.

This can happen if one’s thinking ability is assessed through vision-dependent tests, the researchers explained.

They noted that 1 in 4 people over 50 have undiagnosed vision problems, such as: cataracts or age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which can distort their visual acuity.

money does not generate in full vision loss but severely impairs the ability to read, drive, cook, and even recognize faces. It has no effect on mental function (cognition).

Visual impairments affect about 200 million seniors worldwide, says lead researcher Anne McNamara, Ph.D. Candidate for the University of South Australia.

“Misdiagnosis of cognitive tests can have devastating consequences, leading to unnecessary changes in a person’s life, work, financial or social circumstances,” McNamara University warned in a news release.

For example, if a misjudgment contributes to a diagnosis of cognitive impairment, it can cause psychological problems, including: depression և Anxiety, explained McNamaran.

This study included 24 participants with normal vision who were asked to complete two cognitive tests, one for vision and one for verbal skills. Money modeling tests were done with or without glasses.

Participants had much lower scores on the vision test when wearing glasses, but no significant change in the verbal skills test, according to the study. The results were recently published in the journal Scientific reports.

“People with money already have a lot of problems due to vision loss, inaccurate cognitive assessment is an additional burden that they do not need,” said McNamara.

The authors of the study added that vision problems are often overlooked by health professionals and researchers.

“Researchers can include quick and easy screening tasks before taking human cognitive tests. “Oral assignments should also always be part of the assessment,” McNamara said.
