At least 10 people were killed in a shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York on Saturday afternoon, law enforcement officials told the Associated Press.
Details of the number of people shot at Tops Friendly Market and their conditions were not immediately available. Buffalo police said Saturday afternoon that the alleged shooter, whose identity is unknown, is in custody.
The two officials were not allowed to speak publicly about the issue, they did so on condition of anonymity.
Police officers and the supermarket chain spokesman did not respond to Associated Press messages to receive a comment.
The gunman entered the supermarket with a rifle and opened fire, said one of the officials. Investigators believe the man could have broadcast the shots live to find out if he had published the manifesto online, the official said.
The official warned that the investigation was at an early stage, that the authorities had not yet found a clear motive, but were investigating whether the shooting was racially motivated.
The supermarket is located mainly in the Black Sea district, about five miles north of downtown Buffalo. The surrounding area is mostly residential, there is a Family Dollar shop and a fire station near the shop.
Witnesses said the gunman was wearing military-style clothing and armor, an official said.
Brady Kephart և Shane Hill, both 20, entered the parking lot as soon as the shooter came out. They described him as a white man in his late teens or a full-fledged sports disguise in the early 1920s, wearing a helmet and a rifle.
“He was standing there with a gun to his chin. We were like what was going on, why was this child’s gun in his face? ” Kefart said. He knelt down. “He tore off his helmet, threw his gun, and the police turned to him.”

The shooting came a year after a March 2021 attack on a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colo, killed 10 people. Investigators have not released any information as to why they believe the man accused of the attack targeted the supermarket.
