Portrait of Marilyn Monroe Warhol sold at auction for a record $ 195 million

“Shot Sage Blue Marilyn is the absolute pinnacle of American pop,” said Alex Roter, Christie’s 20th and 21st Century Art Director, in an auction announcement. “Painting goes beyond the genre of portraiture, replacing the art and culture of the 20th century.”

The painting is based on Monroe’s advertising photo from the 1953 film “Niagara”, which was shown in bright colors on her eyes, hair and lips.

Its title refers to a case when a woman shot four portraits of Merlin in Warhol’s studio, saying that “The shot Sage Blue Merlin” was not hit by the bullet.

Monroe was one of Hollywood’s most famous stars until her death on August 4, 1962, at her home in Los Angeles.

Warhol died in 1987.
