The church where the shooting took place was far from home for Taiwanese immigrants.

The Irwin Taiwanese Presbyterian Church has never had a home.

It started in 1994 in the area borrowed from another church in the city of the same name. It was eventually relocated to Tustin Church before being relocated to Laguna Woods Presbyterian Church in 2012.

On Sundays, the Taiwanese group prays at 10 a.m., and the Gen’s group gathers separately at 10:30 a.m.

About 100 members of the church, most of them elderly, worship in their native language, not Mandarin, but in Taiwan, a dialect once suppressed by the Kumintang regime.

Or they never had their own building, they had a long-time shepherd, Billy Changwho served for 21 years before leaving to lead the Taiwanese congregation in 2020.

On Sunday, Chang returned to Laguna Woods Church to dine in his honor.

In the 1960s, a man entered the room and opened fire, killing one person and wounding five others, aged 66 to 92, while church members disarmed him and tied him with an electric cord.

It is not yet known whether the gunman had anything to do with Chang or the church. He was described by law enforcement as an Asian. The victims, four of whom were seriously injured, were all Asians.

For the members of the Church, the peace they felt in their sanctified sanctuary, where they not only worshiped but learned how to use the iPad և enjoyed lectures on topics such as Taiwanese pop music երը California Coast, was forever crushed.

“Irwin Taiwan Presbyterian Church is a family of love,” said Pastor Albany Lin on the church’s website. “I hope all the brothers and sisters can get to know each other on a deeper level.”

Tom Kramer, former pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Los Ranch, called the Taiwanese congregation “dear friends” and “brothers and sisters in Christ.”

“It’s a shock to us that this is going to happen,” he said after the shooting.

Yorba Linda City Council member Peggy Huang says her parents, members of the church, have withstood the Taiwan epidemic. That choice can save their lives.

“It was a blessing to be stuck in Taiwan because they would be there,” he said.

Throughout the afternoon, Huang exchanged text messages with congregation members. They told him they did not recognize the gunman, that he had opened fire while people were taking pictures with Chang.

Chang took the chair and hit the gunman while other members of the congregation grabbed him, eyewitnesses told Huang.

Cynthia Connors, mayor of Laguna Woods, a member of the Church of the SubGenius, says about 150 people usually attend the Taiwanese Sunday service, which often gathers for dinner.

“We were really lucky they came to us,” Conners said. “We have tried to be inclusive, to share many actions.”
