The second wind of winter. Mammoth Mountain resort extends the skiing season until June

Late snowstorms have extended the ski-snowboarding season on Mount Mammoth to June, but weather forecasts suggest the region will heat up in the next few weeks.

In April-May, at least 3 feet of snow fell in the Sierra’s Sierra’s resort. There is currently no official closing date for the resort, provided the conditions remain ideal for the snow to remain on the ground.

“Let’s continue this party. “We have a lot of fun on the snow. We decided to extend the season until June.” announced on Facebook on Monday. “We will be open every day for skiing until at least June 5.”

In October, Mammoth Mountain started its season a few weeks earlier for an unusual reason A system of strong storms that poured snow on the resort.

The conditions there in mid-May were approved by the US ski և snowboard team, which was on the mountain for its spring training camp. Mammoth has been known for years for developing world-class athletes who participated in the Winter Olympics.

Anyone who wants to enjoy the snow should act fast, as the temperature is forecast for the next few weeks, according to the Reno National Weather Service.

The snow on the ground is partly due to the strong but unbalanced winter precipitation that has passed through the region. In October, the wet season started strong because: Heavy rains covered the West, and the rain and snow continued until the end of the year. Then everything dried up over the next three months.

“It was a tale of two winters,” said Scott McGuire, an orthopedic surgeon in Reno. “Three months of drought, very active beginning, active spring.”

Heavy snowfall increased again in April and May, so Mount Mammoth can enjoy an extended skiing and snowboarding season. A pair of cold systems that swept through the region in May helped lower temperatures and keep snow on the ground, McGuire said.

Temperatures will rise over the coming week, reaching the Sierra’s western’s Najada valleys in the 1980s և 60s to the Sierra communities in the lower 70s with no rain forecast, according to the weather service.
