Ukrainian forces will retreat from the key city as Russia moves east

It was just one of two cities still under Ukrainian command in the Luhansk region, which, along with neighboring Donetsk, forms the Donbas.

Now the twin city of Lisichansk, around which the Kremlin’s troops have made significant strides in recent days, is all that stands between Russia’s “full control of one-half of Ukraine’s industrial center.”

For Sierodonetsk, street-to-street fighting has become the focus of the conflict in recent weeks, Russia is slowly moving towards its larger goal of taking full control of the Donbas region.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that the battle for the city could determine the direction of a wider battle in the east of the country.

“This is a very fierce battle, a very fierce one, perhaps one of the most difficult during this war,” Zelensky said in one of his nightly video messages. “Syerodonetsk remains the epicenter of the meeting in Donbas,” he added. “For the most part, this is where the fate of our Donbas is decided.”
